There are reluctant writers in every classroom around Australia. What they often fail to recognise is that they’ve already built up a bank of quality stories from their everyday experiences; they just don’t know how to readily access them.

Author and illustrator Casey Hawkins, is a young award-winning teacher and visual artist who aspires to work with as many students as possible to boost their confidence and know-how in creative story telling.

Reluctant writers need to be provided with appropriate models which help them believe they can write and create a book. Noonie and the Missing Bone incorporates basic writing techniques students can identify and apply to develop their own stories. The illustrations are equally simplistic to encourage students to create their own line drawings to accompany their published texts.

‘Noonie and the Missing Bone' was extremely well written and I loved the fact that we saw actual videos of these characters before reading the picture book. The students couldn't wait to be writers just like Casey and were captivated by the idea that they could choose their very own pet from the shop window or an animal that they knew to be in their story. It really sparked their enthusiasm to write!

Kellie Ferguson, primary teacher, Carrum P.S.

Casey uses her creativity to develop engaging and authentic learning experiences for children. She uses her own life experiences in her illustrated text to show children that they too can be inspired by their own lives to create fun and innovative writing pieces.

Francesca Spillane, educator.

Casey is a fantastic teacher and role model to her students. She is down to earth and creates the most exciting and interesting programs and resources that wow everyone around her. She loves what she does and this is shown through the relationship she has with everyone she comes across.

Jemma Reeves, primary teacher, Alyangula Area School.
