Futurity starts its journey toward Reconciliation

Futurity exists to help create a society where everyone has access to the education and lifelong learning opportunities needed to fulfil their aspirations.

We work towards this every single day by providing financial products to assist our Members save and plan for education, and by creating broader education-focused impact in our communities.

Focusing on our broader impact is central to achieving our vision, and we continue to invest where it is needed most.

We know many Indigenous children around Australia suffer from entrenched disadvantage, reflected among other measures in significantly lower:

  • rates of school attendance,

  • levels of literacy and numeracy, and

  • levels of educational attainment overall.

As an inclusive, education-purposed mutual organisation, Futurity is committed to taking meaningful action to advance Reconciliation with our Indigenous communities. Consistent with our vision, we hope that through this process we can play a small part in helping to improve these outcomes.

First, Futurity is taking a deliberately methodical and sensitive approach to the development of our first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), acknowledging both the limitations of our knowledge and the complexity of the challenge. We have been working with Indigenous Cultural Connections, an Indigenous business, to help us develop our cultural competency to respectfully engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and help us accelerate the design of our Reconciliation Action Plan and the work of the Futurity Education Foundation.

Second, in setting out the initial mission for the Futurity Education Foundation, which we will share in the coming months, Futurity’s Board has sought ways to clearly express our support for initiatives which promote listening to the views of First Nations people on issues of most importance to them, especially education.

Therefore, the Board has released a Statement which sets out why a First Nations Voice to Parliament would be valuable and aligned with our vision. You can access the Statement here. We encourage Members to read this Statement and reflect on the link between the Voice and better education outcomes for Indigenous people around Australia
